Following the news from Austria
Provided by AGPThe incidents allegedly involved two US Air Force PC-12 aircraft, a turboprop model commonly used for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. A newspaper reported that the aircraft triggered air-policing alerts on Sunday and again on Monday after crossing into Austrian airspace without the required clearance for military transit.
A spokesperson for Austria’s Defense Ministry, Michael Bauer, said two Eurofighters were launched on Monday at 12:31 p.m. local time (10:31 GMT) to identify the aircraft following the unauthorized entry. After interception by Austrian jets, the US aircraft reportedly changed course and returned toward Munich.
Bauer also confirmed that the same aircraft had been observed over Upper Austria on Sunday, which led to the first scramble. He added that the matter would be addressed through diplomatic channels.
Austria has recently strengthened monitoring of its airspace. Last month, it reportedly restricted the use of its airspace by US military aircraft involved in operations related to the conflict with Iran, citing its neutrality policy.
Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler also commented on social media, saying Austrians wanted “nothing to do with (US President Donald) Trump’s politics of chaos and his war,” and added: “Neutrality is a precious asset in our country. No to war.”
